At the Nvidia GTC event, several thought leaders hailed their visions for the future of the metaverse. We look at Tencent’s vision for building the metaverse, NVIDIA’s asset exchange project, and Roblox’s concept of protecting the player. In addition, we take a look at NVIDIA’s physics engine and asset exchange project.
Tencent’s views on building the metaverse
Building the metaverse is the ultimate dream of many people, and Tencent has several advantages in developing a metaverse offering. Besides having a large cash balance, Tencent has many other advantages that could help it build the metaverse before its rivals, including NetEase. The Chinese tech giant owns 40% of the shares of the two most popular livestreaming platforms in China, and has registered over 20 metaverse-related trademarks in China.
Beijing has been ambivalent toward the concept of metaverses, although state-run think tanks have flagged national security risks. Still, Chinese leaders are seeing metaverse development as a new way to make money. Although Beijing has been sceptical, some experimentation is already underway in the country, including at the local government level. Shanghai’s government announced in late 2021 that the metaverse would be a part of its 14th five-year plan for developing the electronic information industry. Local municipal governments have also held seminars to promote metaverse development.
While Chinese internet giants tend to be more open to innovation, the Chinese interactive mobile platforms may have the edge in terms of building a metaverse. Tencent, for example, is the world’s largest video game company and dominates the online gaming space. Moreover, it is in a much better position than Meta to pivot to the concept of building a metaverse. In addition, Tencent already has a vast business empire spanning gaming, mobile payments, and virtual offices. In addition to assembling an international team to launch a new gaming studio, the company has already registered trademarks for the concept.
Meanwhile, rival companies have jumped on the metaverse bandwagon, with the likes of Microsoft and Disney making announcements about building their own metaverse. Meanwhile, many brands are taking advantage of this growing trend to compete for consumer attention. Nike has filed seven patent applications with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office for virtual goods and entertainment services. ByteDance is another example of a tech company’s strategy.
NVIDIA’s asset interchange project
While the concept of the metaverse has been the subject of scientific fiction for decades, it is only recently gaining attention in the engineering and scientific communities. The newest version of the concept is being showcased by Nvidia at its GTC Fall 2021 event, titled “A vision for the metaverse.” It is a vast universe of virtual worlds interconnected to each other like the universes of Ready One and Snow Crash.
The new technology will enable users to explore the real world and the virtual world at the same time, with no barriers between the two. Unlike traditional virtual worlds, the metaverse will be open and free for everyone to explore, and it will eventually replace conventional communication methods like voice, gesture, eye tracking, and haptics. Participants will be able to use any device or real-world abilities to participate in the metaverse.
The concept of the metaverse is one that has fascinated gamers for years. The CEO of Tencent, Jensen Huang, has been touting the benefits of metaverse-like technology in different markets. The technology will allow gaming apps to learn the user’s position in 3D space by using real-world content. In the near future, Tencent is also working on integrating real-world 3D content into its games.
One of the most impressive features of the Omniverse is its ability to simulate the behavior of objects. NVIDIA’s PhysX engine enables simulation of robots, rigid bodies, structural deformation, fluid dynamics, and even smoke and particles. The new technology allows for the production of audio, video, and 3D content. Further, the technology enables NVIDIA to create a seamless user experience.
The Metaverse has already produced many digital twins of household brands like Apple, BMW, and Ericsson. The latter used it during its Beta stage to better analyze 5G coverage. These users also featured prominently during the NVIDIA keynote. Among other applications, Omniverse is being used by Siemens Energy for predictive maintenance and fire movements. It has even helped Siemens Energy build digital versions of Heat Recovery Steam Generators and predict corrosions.
NVIDIA’s physics engine
A panel of global metaverse luminaries and futurists will discuss the technology’s future potential at the NVIDIA GTC event. These visionaries will also discuss how to build a solid foundation in the near term. While Meta is an ambitious vision, its leaders say that their efforts are well worth the wait. Here’s why:
“We live in a hyper-connected world. We have a common future,” said Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang at the event. “The metaverse will bring us all closer together, and the human-computer relationship will become even closer.”
Nvidia is making a big deal out of their giveaway of Omniverse software licenses to the first 500 metaverse developers. Nvidia knows that the creative energy of users will be key to making a metaverse vibrant and exciting. In addition to unleashing creative energy, this freebie is an investment in the growth of the metaverse. Nvidia’s graphics processing units are the industry standard in 3D simulation and gaming. The company is setting itself up to be a major player in the metaverse.
The keynote at NVIDIA GTC event featured a new way of interacting with metaverses. For the first time, the Omniverse was introduced by NVIDIA’s CEO Jensen Huang. The new platform is compatible with all major 3D tools. It was in beta testing as recently as April and is now ready for use. The Omniverse platform comes with the NVIDIA Omniverse Avatar, an interactive avatar that understands facial expressions, recognizes multiple languages, and is capable of intelligent recommendations.
Roblox’s concept of protecting the players
While Roblox is not the first online gaming site to address the issue of child abuse, it is one of the most popular. The game was launched in 2004 with the purpose of protecting children from predators and online harassment. Roblox has long been a favorite of children aged nine to twelve. The game generates profits from players purchasing virtual currency called Robux, which is used to purchase in-game items. The site splits the profits with independent developers. As a result, these developers are far more closely linked to the game than to other social media platforms. However, many teens complain about the toxic content that is present on these sites.
Although Roblox attempts to protect its users, this doesn’t make it completely safe. While there are certain risks of bullying, Roblox also enables parents to protect their children from such situations. Moreover, parents should teach their children about internet etiquette, such as not sharing personal information online. It is also important to teach children to keep their passwords safe. In addition to this, parents should familiarize themselves with Roblox’s parental controls.
While Roblox has made its reputation on child safety, some critics believe that it is not enough. Roblox has taken a proactive approach to prevent its players from viewing inappropriate content. It has also implemented parental controls, chat filters, and other measures to protect its young users. Its games can be graphic and violent, and parents should be aware of the dangers. Roblox has apologized to the victim and is working with her to spread the word.
Though the game creators are aware of the risks of child safety, many have raised privacy concerns. Nevertheless, the creators of “Roblox” feel that the system reflects the erosion of privacy in our society. Furthermore, many “Roblox” users have joked about stealing their parents’ IDs. Fake submissions of fake IDs became a meme on the popular video website TikTok. In addition to the privacy issues, the system allows users to report, block, and mute other users they find abusive.
